Bucket list: Destinations

This year, I hope, is going to be the year where I start to see more of the world. So far I’ve been to 2 of the worlds 7 continents and a handful of countries. Most of my trips have been to holiday and relax not to travel and explore. There’s a whole world out there I feel I’m yet to see and I’m desperate to get going! I’ve decided, therefore, to make myself a bucket list of places I want to see, things I want to do and activities I hope to try. There’s LOTS on that list! So I’ve decided to break it down so I can keep a handle on what I hope to see and do in 2016! I hope that with these goals in front of me I’ll be able to get saving and get travelling!

Six countries I hope to visit in 2016-

Home to the largest mountain in the world and a night sky like no other Nepal has also been top of my list of places to see. Not only does the scenery call, but the way of life does too. With a culture of kindness and generosity the streets of Nepal sound idllic. I hope to stay at the Kopan Monastery when I go. Here you can take part in 10 day introductory courses to Buddhism and meditation. On arrival you must check in your phone, computer and iPad allowing you to exit the world for a while and get in touch once more with your own mind. Not only do I hope to stay at Kopan I also plan on volunteering for a few weeks whilst out there. The country is still recovering from the devastating earthquake which hit it in May 2015 and to travel the area without giving anything back when I’m perfectly able to me, feels both selfish and wrong. As you can tell I’ve planned this trip more than any other and I’m desperate to jump on a plane and get going!

The colourful streets of Havana, littered with vintage cars and cigar smokers, to me, looks like something from an old hollywood movie. I’m desperate to walk through Old Havana and be immersed into a culture very different from my own. The architecture, history and nightlife are all something I hope to experience sooner rather than later!

Though I live only a 40 minutes ferry from this beautiful land I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never been. I think because it’s so close I’ve never considered it for a holiday, especially as the rain reminds me too much of home, I’m usually searching for some sun! But whilst I’ve been in Saint Martin I met a man from Dublin and he insisted I wouldn’t be disappointed when I saw the rolling hills and stunning shores. So I’m going to take his word for it and go an Irish adventure!

Since as long as I can remember I’ve been desperate to go on safari. Seeing wild creatures in their natural habitat, undisturbed and at ease looks incredible. As does the African night sky and the beaches of Zanzibar. This really would be the trip of a lifetime, one I hope to one day be able to do!

Everything about Chile looks breathtaking. The wilderness is untouched, beautiful and really second to none. There are hundreds of places I hope to see whilst in Chile, but the top of the list is the Atacama desert. With the title of the driest dessert in the world, you’d expect there’d be very little to see, but apparently this couldn’t be further from the truth with the desert being home to some of the most awe-inspiring sights one could fest their eyes on.

The main draw for me to Iceland is the Northern lights. A spectacle I dream of laying eyes on. The dancing colours in the nights sky seem other worldly, as if for a moment you’re not in Europe and instead have been transported to a new land, one far, far away. As well as the Northern lights, the thought of spending an afternoon relaxing in the blue lagoon (where apparently your skin glows on exiting) sounds rather lovely! Not only do the skies and lagoons sound exciting, the transport does too. Huskies?! Yes please!!

Have you been to any of the places on my Bucket list? If so, please give me any advice/travel tips, I’d love to know where you enjoyed/didn’t!
